1 Piece MDF Doors versus 5 Piece Hardwood Doors

When it comes to choosing the right cabinet doors for your home, understanding the differences between a 5 piece hardwood door or 1 piece MDF (medium density fiberboard) door can help you make an informed decision. Each material has its own advantages and considerations, depending on your style preferences, budget, and long-term needs.

Five Piece Cabinet Doors

These cabinet doors are a premium product crafted entirely of natural wood, showcasing the characteristics of the chosen wood species (maple, oak, walnut, cherry). Typically finished with clear coat like polyurethane, they allow for the patterns, textures and colors of the natural wood to show and can be a great option for various styles. Five piece wood doors are often comprised of an MDF center panel with solid wood frame, referred to as a hybrid door, which are typically painted to finish.

Pros:

  • Natural Beauty: 5 piece wood doors offer a timeless, authentic appearance with unique grain patterns and rich textures that add warmth to any space.

  • Durability: Hardwoods are strong and can withstand years of use with proper maintenance.

  • Customization: They can be stained or painted in various finishes to match any design style.

  • Longevity: When cared for properly, solid wood doors can last for decades.

Cons:

  • Expansion & Contraction: Wood naturally expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity, which can lead to warping or cracking over time.

  • Cost: 5 piece wood doors typically come with a higher price tag compared to 1 piece doors.

  • Maintenance: Regular upkeep, such as refinishing and sealing, may be required to maintain their appearance and prevent damage.

One Piece MDF Cabinet Doors

When considering a composite material for cabinet doors, Medium Density Fiberboard or High Density Fiberboard is what will be used. These materials are engineered and constructed with small leftover wood fibers. Combined with additives and heat treatment, the end product is a dense and sturdy material that mimics solid wood. MDF & HDF offer a uniform density without visible wood grain and a smooth surface, ideal for paint or veneered finish. At Perris Woodworks, we utilize CNC technology to cut custom shapes and accented designs into sheet stock which allow for endless possibilities when it comes to style whether you desire a minimalist or an ornate design.

Pros:

  • Seamless Design: Single piece doors are custom-machined from one solid sheet, resulting in a smooth, seamless look with no visible frame seams or joints.

  • Stability: MDF is less prone to expansion and contraction, making it an excellent choice for areas with fluctuating humidity levels.

  • Affordability: Single piece doors offer a lower price point compared to 5 piece wood doors, making them a budget-friendly option without sacrificing style.

  • Moisture Resistance: We use a special moisture resistant High-density fiberboard (HDF), a type of MDF, providing enhanced resistance to moisture relative to traditional doors.

  • Repairability: If damaged, as long as cabinet doors are painted, we can easily sand and refinish just like a solid 5 piece wood door

  • Paint-Friendly Surface: MDF's smooth finish makes it ideal for painted cabinets, allowing for a flawless application.

Cons:

  • Susceptibility to Damage: MDF can be more prone to chipping or denting compared to solid wood, however with proper finish this is not a huge concern.

  • Weight: MDF doors can be heavier than some solid wood options, requiring sturdy hinges and hardware.

IN CONCLUSION...

Both 5 piece hardwood and single piece MDF cabinet doors offer distinct benefits. If you're looking for a classic, natural look and long-lasting durability, 5 piece hardwood may be the best choice. Whether you prefer a sleek, modern aesthetic of a slab door or more traditional style, MDF and HDF solutions offer cost savings and stability. Consider your priorities in terms of budget, design, and maintenance when making your decision.
